HOW TO GET YOUR CDL?
An updated step-by-step guide on how to get your CDL with the new Entry-Level Driver Training Course requirement!
ELDT
Beginning February 7, 2022, passing the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) course is made an official requirement for getting your CDL. You will need to pass the ELDT before obtaining your CDL. We recommend obtaining your ELDT while studying for your CLP.
DoT Physical
Schedule and complete your Department of Transportation (DoT) mandatory medical exam. There are many providers; like Walgreens, CVS, and many local clinics. You will need your physical to get your CLP, so we suggest getting this out of the way.
Schedule your CLP Exam
Visit your State’s department of motor vehicles website to learn how and where you can schedule your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) exam, and what documents you will need to provide.
CLP Exam
The CDL School also provides you with access to our exam prep quiz bank of 500 questions to ensure you are prepared for the exam. You can find it here! Also, obtain a copy of the CDL manual from your local DMV.
Behind the Wheel Training
After passing your CLP exam, register for Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Training. With behind the wheel you will step into the drivers’ seat for the first time, training with a professional instructor that will take you step-by-step everything you need to know to drive a commercial vehicle.
BTW Exam
After successfully completing the BTW training course, the next step is registering for your CDL exam. Check your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles to schedule your exam.
